In all census returns from 1861 to 1901, William gives his profession as a labourer. He was born in West Witton moving to Kiplin by 1875 and to Moulton by 1879. He is to be found in Moulton in 1881, North Cowton in 1891 and Dalton on Tees in 1901. It is only conjecture but it seems likely that he moved to find work.
