In the 1851 census John gives his birthplace as Colburn, Yorkshire. He is living in Burnley, Lancashire and is described as a widowed farm labourer. He is living with his son Joseph - butcher - his daughter Elizabeth - power loom weaver - and his 'son' George. Generally the children state that they were born in West Witton despite being baptised in Leyburn.

In 1841 Joseph and Rebecca Sedgwick are both in West Witton
