In 1871 he is described as a beer house keeper with his second wife and daughter Beatrice. He is absent from the household in 1881 and his wife Emma describes herself as a married annuitant.

in 1891 Emma and three younger daughters are together and the two eldest children are lodging in Bradford with Emma and Robert W Wordsworth.
