John was a hand loom weaver at Hutton Rudby in 1851. In 1861 and 1871 he is a railway goods agent in Billingham, Durham. In 1881 his granddaughter Mary Gardner is living with the family, in 1891 she is called Mary Sedgwick and in 1901 Mary Gardner again.

In 1901 niece Sarah Marriner, widow, is living with the family.
