Roger was described as a banker when he died. Byrom, Allen, Sedgwick and Place was Manchesters first bank and was founded in the mid eighteenth century.

A Roger is also described as a 'Doctor of Physick' in the 1766 will of Frances Leigh.

He owned stock in Calder and Heble Navigation - his widow and son sold them in 1784. He also owned lead mines in Derbyshire. His sons John and James were described as silk and cotton manufacturers.
