In 1891 Edward was a 'Sergeant of Police' living in Islington with his first wife and in 1901 he was an Inspector in the Metropolitan Police living in Greenwich. He joined the force in 1877 and retired in 1903.

Were Edward and his first wife divorced? She is alive and living in Hemel Hempstead in 1911. Second wife Emma, sons Frederick and Ronald are in Tendring in 1911. Edward junior and Dorothy are in Malling but in different households. Edward senior is in Colchester.
