Robert was an engine driver. In 1851 Robert and his first wife are living in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. In 1871 Robert and his daughter Gertrude are living with his father in law Thomas Almond in Egglescliffe. His wife Isabella is living in Saltburn by the Sea (Marske). No sign of the couple in 1891 but in 1901 they are living with their extended family in Stockton on Tees.

Son Arthur Austin is in the 1901 census as Alfred A!
