In 1871 Thomas and his elder sister are living with their cousins Thomas and Rachel Wilson in Great Langton, Yorkshire. By 1881 Thomas and his family are living in Blackwell where he is working as a railway plate layer. In 1891, 1901 and 1911 Thomas is described as an agricultural labourer living in Southwick, Durham and Tunstall, Yorkshire. Son James is a police constable living in Middlesbrough in 1901.
