George Sidgwick (1618 - 1685)

George Sidgwick [George Sidgwick]
bpt. 10 January 1618 Killington, Westmorland
d 10 June 1685

Another notable member of the Sedgwick/Sidgwick family. Can anyone add any data (and order) to this page?

The index of Cambridge Alumni states the following;

GEORGE SIDGWICK

College: ST JOHN'S
Died: June 10, 1685
More Information: Adm. sizar (age 16) at ST JOHN'S, July 8, 1631. S. of George, husbandman, of Killington, Westmorland. B. there. School, Sedbergh. Appointed secretary to Lady Anne Clifford, Countess of Pembroke, 1652. Tutor to John Tufton (Earl of Thanet). Retired to Colling-field, near Kendal, 1668. Died June 10, 1685, aged 67 (sic). (Burn's Westmorland, 294; Lady Anne Clifford, 200.)

A very good account of the life of George's patron can be found here. It is interesting to note that there are possible connections between George Sidgwick and William Sedgwick of Woburn via the Russell family. Could the letter from Margaret Russell to George's grandfather mean that he had links with Woburn too? Apparently a James Sedgwick married Dorothy Defraine in Woburn in 1579 and had a son Richard baptised and buried in 1580. Could he fit in here?

A James son of Jeffrey Sedgwick of Killington is mentioned in the 1593 will of James Sedgwick of Sedbergh. In a2a there is another reference to a Killington Sidgwick (nb a chapman is an itinerant beggar)
